The spirit of generosity is spreading through NYC this Thanksgiving season, from full blown free feasts on the L train to more than 1,000 turkeys given away in Queens. Most soup kitchens and other volunteer opportunities are completely booked on Thanksgiving Day, but some smaller organizations still need volunteers, and donations are welcome just about everywhere. Here are a few to consider if you want to give thanks by giving back.
Pie Donations At Grace Church
Do you have an amazing pumpkin or apple pie that you want to share with older Brooklynites? Heights and Hills is hosting its 49th annual Thanksgiving Dinner due to the collaborative efforts of the Cobble Hill Health Center, the 84th Police Precinct and Grace Church Brooklyn Heights. Although they have enough people to help serve and hand out the food, they are still accepting pies. That’s right, you can drop off your treasured family recipe pies at 254 Hicks St, Brooklyn, NY 11201 on Thanksgiving between 9am and 11am. Details here.
Give Thanks & Serve
Bedford Central Presbyterian Church, in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, invites you to volunteer this Thanksgiving to help those in need by providing food, clothing, and toiletries. The event takes place at Bedford Central Presbyterian Church, 1200 Dean Street Brooklyn, NY 11216 on November 28th from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Those who participate are also encouraged to donate gently used winter clothing for men, women, and children. Specifically jeans, gloves, scarves, and coats. You can register for the event through EventBrite.
Thanksgiving Dinner at East New York Clubhouse
East New York Clubhouse, a “community environment for adults with mental illness within which they can attain their life goals” is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for those living with mental illnesses. Volunteers can help with cooking, and serving dinner as well as participating in seasonal activities with the guests. Those who do not have a family to spend the holiday with can have dinner at the clubhouse, located at 2697 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11207. The event starts at 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Sign up for the event through here.
Brooklyn Book Bodega
Anyone with unused children's books piled up in the corner is encouraged to donate those to the Brooklyn Book Bodega. They accept gently used books for those aged 0-18. With their initiative, they hope to “create a vibrant and welcoming community that encourages children and adolescents from diverse backgrounds to engage with each other over a shared passion for reading while building their personal libraries.” Drop off the books to Green in Brooklyn at 432 Myrtle Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205. But if you have more than fifty books to donate, please refer to their website for more information.
