Four men were killed in Chinatown early Saturday morning, while another was critically injured. The victims were all homeless, and police have a 24-year-old suspect, also homeless, in custody.

During a press conference, NYPD officials said that the victims had been sleeping.

Just before 2 a.m., police from the 5th Precinct were called to 2 Bowery, where the 911 caller said someone was being attacked. They found one man lying in the street, with head trauma, and then another victim with severe head trauma approached them. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the other man was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

Two witnesses, police say, told the responding officers that a suspect wearing black pants and a black jacket had been attacking the men with an object before fleeing west on Doyers Street.

Officers later found the suspect at Canal and Mulberry, holding what officials called a metal pipe. The Post reports, "who was holding a three-foot-long, blood-covered metal objection that appeared to be from a construction site." He was taken into custody.

Two hours later, during a police canvas of the area, three other men were found dead on East Broadway, two outside of 2 East Broadway and another outside 17 East Broadway. All victims had head trauma.

The NYPD has set up crimes scenes on Bowery and East Broadway and are continuing to canvas and look to see whether there are any other victims. Officials stressed that the investigation was in its early stages and also urged anyone with information to call 1-800-577-TIPS.

This post has been updated with information from the NYPD press conference.
