A 21-year-old man who sustained critical injuries when a driver struck him in a 12th Avenue crosswalk near Chelsea Piers last month has died, the NYPD confirmed Friday.
Frederick Swope, a rising senior at Baruch College and Virginia native, succumbed to his injuries on July 24th, according to an obituary in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
No charges have been brought against the 24-year-old driver, whose name has not been released. He remained on the scene following the crash, according to police.
A preliminary police report stated that Swope was crossing 12th Avenue at West 22nd Street around 10:20 p.m. on July 17th when he was struck. Police said that the southbound driver, behind the wheel of a 2013 Honda, had the right of way when he struck Swope. An NYPD spokesperson told Gothamist on Friday that Swope was in the crosswalk, but maintained that, according to the investigation, the driver had the right of way.
Safe streets advocates have recently criticized the NYPD for its practice of disseminating information about traffic crashes to the press. In several recent instances, police have backpedaled an initial report attributed to an anonymous NYPD source that placed blame on the crash victim.
NYPD Inspector Dennis Fulton told Gothamist this week that, "Right now the current way works: CIS will do the investigation and then relay the information to DCPI [the public information office] and they will relay information to the press."
Swope lived in Chelsea, according to the NYPD. He was studying for a business and economics degree and interning this summer at Northwestern Mutual. He hoped to eventually get his MBA at Baruch Zicklin School of Business, according to his obituary. He loved sports—swimming in particular.
The Daily News interviewed the mother of Swope's former roommate, actor Austin Zajur.
"I was grateful that Austin had such a good roommate and true friend to live with in New York, who was genuine, kind, caring and such a good human being,” she told the tabloid.
A GoFundMe page launched during the week that Swope was hospitalized has raised $8,015 as of this writing, exceeding an initial goal of $3,000.
Swope's is the first pedestrian fatality at the intersection of West 22nd Street and 12th Avenue in at least eight years, according to Vision Zero's crash tracker, which documents back to 2009 and was last updated on June 30th.
