An 81-year-old man who rear-ended four vehicles in the Bronx Friday, killing two pedestrians and injuring several had just driven through a steady red light, according to police.

The NYPD said the investigation is continuing and no one had been arrested Saturday. The driver’s name had not been released.

The crash happened when the man was driving a white Mercedes Benz west on Allerton Avenue, near Holland Avenue. Police said Friday that the man was unable to stop as he approached oncoming traffic.

When police arrived at the scene around 2:15 p.m., officers found three pedestrians who were unconscious and unresponsive with trauma to their heads and bodies, the NYPD said. The pedestrians were transported to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition. Two of them later died, according to police. They were Angel Johnson, 39, and Robin Kennedy, 57. Both of them lived within blocks of the crash, police said.

The people in all six vehicles involved in the collision remained at the scene and were transported to Jacobi Hospital in stable condition, the NYPD said.
