Three people died Tuesday after a driver struck two pedestrians and another car near a food truck in Queens, police said.
According to the NYPD, officers responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. to a 911 call about a car crash near 19th Avenue and 42nd Street in Astoria. A preliminary investigation found an 84-year-old man was driving a 2010 Toyota Corolla north on 42nd Street when he hit two men, ages 42 and 70, who were standing outside the food truck.
Officials said the Corolla then spun around and hit a Volvo sedan attempting a U-turn on the street. The Volvo driver was uninjured, according to police.
Emergency medical workers took the Corolla driver and 70-year-old pedestrian to Elmhurst Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead. The 42-year-old pedestrian was declared dead on the scene, police said.
The NYPD made no arrests as it continued to investigate the crash.
Police data shows traffic fatalities were down 21% citywide through Aug. 10, compared to the same period last year. In the Queens North Patrol Borough, which includes Astoria, they were down 52%.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from police and may be updated.
