UPDATE: The accused gunman is in police custody, according to news reports and a law enforcement official with knowledge of the arrest.
Two police officers were shot in Newark on Tuesday afternoon, and the suspect was arrested nearby Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Two police officers arrived at a building in the city’s South Ward around 1 p.m. Tuesday responding to a call from a concerned citizen who said they recognized a suspect from a police flier about a shooting on Oct. 28 in their building, Mayor Ras Baraka said at a press conference Tuesday evening. After not finding the suspect in the building, cops made their way to the parking lot in the back of the building, where the suspect was spotted, Baraka said. Officials said the suspect brandished a gun and shot at both of the officers at close range.
Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Frage said later the man had been identified as Kendall Howard, 30, of East Orange. The New Jersey State PBA tweeted its congratulations to the Newark Police late Wednesday morning.
One officer was shot through the face into the shoulder, and the other was shot in the leg, he said. Both remained in the hospital as of Tuesday night, in stable condition.
As of late Tuesday night, Frage said the shooter was not in the building and remained at large. Prior to that, Baraka said, police had gone door to door, searching apartments with the aid of SWAT.
On Tuesday, police had sealed off a perimeter around the building, where the shooter was believed to be, and began evacuating neighbors.
Authorities did not know what type of gun the suspect used in the shooting, the mayor said.
The FBI was assisting Newark police, the agency tweeted late Tuesday afternoon, asking the public to avoid the area around Chancellor Avenue and Velsor Place.
Gov. Phil Murphy said he was monitoring the situation on Tuesday.
“The state is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe,” he said via Twitter.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also posted on Twitter in support of the injured officers.
“All New Yorkers are praying for the officers injured in Newark and their families,” Hochul said. “Thank you to all first responders who are working to keep residents safe. We stand with the people of New Jersey and will offer any assistance necessary to @GovMurphy and his team.”
This is a developing story and is being updated as information becomes available.
