2 dead after separate shootings in Brooklyn and the Bronx, police say

Police are investigating after two men were killed in separate shootings in the Bronx and Brooklyn over the weekend.

According to NYPD officials, 25-year-old Daniel Lachapel died on Saturday after he was shot in the head in front of his building on Allerton Avenue in Allerton just before 11 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said on Monday that the motive of the shooting was still unclear. They had not made any arrests and had no description of a possible suspect.

Just after midnight on Sunday, 24-year-old Maurice Boodie was gunned down in front of his home on Strauss Street in Brownsville, according to the officials. He was shot in his chest and right leg and pronounced dead shortly after at Brookdale University Hospital.

As of Monday morning, police had not made any arrests or identified any suspects or possible motive for the shooting. Blood spatters were still visible throughout the first-floor hallway of the building where Boodie lived.

Lachapel is the first person reported to have died from gun violence this year in the 49th Precinct, which includes Allerton and other northeast Bronx neighborhoods like Morris Park, Van Nest, Pelham Parkway and Eastchester Gardens. Two people were shot and killed in the precinct last year, according to NYPD analyzed by Gothamist.

Boodie is the eighth person reported to have been shot and killed this year in the 73rd Precinct, which includes Brownsville, Ocean Hill and part of Crown Heights. Six people were fatally shot in the precinct in 2023, the data shows.

Over the weekend, in addition to looking for the suspects in the Bronx and Brooklyn killings, NYPD detectives arrested a man who allegedly fired his gun at a subway station in Manhattan on Saturday.

Police said Bronx resident Miguel Urena, 30, fired a single shot around 5:30 p.m. on the northbound mezzanine of the 135th Street station on the 2 and 3 lines. The shot didn’t hit anyone, according to police, but Urena was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

His arraignment was pending on Monday in Manhattan Criminal Court.
