Mike Mussina led the way Friday night pitching seven, strong innings to pace the Yankees to a 9-4 victory over Oakland. Mussina ran into trouble in the third inning, when the first to Oakland batters reached base, but he escaped with the help of a great double play turned by Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter. Cano has impressed the Yankees with his defense and has recently started to hit, going 3-4 Friday with two doubles and one RBI.
Tino Martinez did not homer in the game, snapping his streak at five straight games. It had been the longest streak by a Yankee since Don Mattingly tied the MLB record by homering in eight straight games in 1987. Jason Giambi was given a surprising start at DH and managed to a single in the ninth inning. Giambi, who refused a demotion to the minors earlier in the week, also struck out twice and is hitting .198. Joe Torre seems inclined to stick with him, even with Bernie Williams on the bench and Ruben Sierra on the way.
The Yankees will play two more games in Oakland sending Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson to the mound Saturday and Sunday before heading to Seattle for three games against the Mariners. Then it is back to NYC to face the Mets and Pedro Martinez.
