2006_04_syankeeslogo.jpgThe Yankees 4-1 victory over Tampa Bay marked only the second time this season they have won when scoring less than six runs. Hideki Matsui provided the key hit, a two-run single in the sixth inning that gave New York the lead. Derek Jeter added a RBI-double and Jason Giambi also had a RBI to complete the scoring.

New York actually could have scored six runs, but Joey Gathright made a spectacular play, taking away a two-run homer from Gary Sheffield in the first. The Tampa defense made several great plays during the series, but Rusell Branyon’s error in the sixth setup the Yankees’ rally.

New York now welcomes Toronto to the Stadium for a three-game series. Jaret Wright, who is fighting to prove he still belongs in the majors, will take the ball tonight. Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina round out the rotation. After the weekend, the Yankees head to Boston for a two-game showdown with the Red Sox.
