Sports talk radio and water cooler discussions throughout the Northeast agree - if there's really any kind of instant karmic retribution factor between New England and this city, then the Jets would find a way to beat the Patriots (winners of an NFL record 20 consecutive games) in a battle of unbeatens and AFC East rivals Sunday (4:05 p.m., TV: 2 WCBS, Radio: 1050 AM WEPN) at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Not since 1973 have two NFL teams gone this deep into the season undefeated (Jets and then played each other.
Of course, the headlines of the week were congested with baseball talk, but it could be the defining moment of the entire regular season for both teams. One thing is for certain with the Pats' fans on Sunday - they will be distracted by the impending Game Two of the World Series (listed as a 7:30 p.m. 'start'). Another sure bet for their fans: Alcohol will be involved (joke, people).
Even die-hard Jets fan/eternal pessimist and WFAN talk show host Joe Benigno (a former average Joe sports fan without a radio career) resigned himself to the fact that if the Red Sox could finally beat the Yankees in a meaningful game, "...the Jets may actually have a chance to win the Super Bowl while I am still on this Earth." Even with people like Joe and Fireman Ed in mind, after two consecutive close calls for the Jets, Gothamist will have to pick the Pats this week, if only by a narrow margin, say 22-20.
Meanwhile this week, the team's West Side Stadium came under further scrutiny as a key city official reported the financing plan as 'extremely risky'.
