2005_06smatsui.JPGThe Yankees finally ended their six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win in Minnesota on Saturday. Ruben Sierra's sacrifice fly in the 10th put the Yankees ahead, and they improved their record to 28-27. The win was a much-needed one for a team that has played so poorly of late.

The Yankees are still in an unfamiliar position. A May surge simply got the Yankees out of an 11-19 hole; they still could use another solid month to get themselves back to where they are used to being. For all the talk about the lack of Yankee pitching, Gothamist has been most surprised at their offense of late. How can a line-up that returns the same dominant core from last year struggle so much against weak pitching? Batting Tony Womack and his .310 on base percentage isn't the answer. Neither is having a clean-up position that hasn't produced a home run in 40 games.

Still, for all the flak the media give the Yankees, not too many other teams would be upset over being one game over .500 the first week of June. During the Yankees run of dominace, they have rarely struggled to assume command of their division. Plenty of division champions in years past have been in similar or worse positions to this year's Yankees. Whether the Yankees end up on top of the AL East remains to be seen, but their being the Yankees leads to much of this reaction to their struggles.
