Father's Day was just this past Sunday, but Pedro Martinez isn't nice to his daddy, at least not anymore. Last night, Martinez and the Mets defeated the Yankees, 6-4 in the first game of this weekend's Subway Series. Despite allowing a lead off home run to Derek Jeter in the 1st inning, Martinez recovered and went 8 innings while allowing 6 hits and 2 runs. Mike Mussina, picked up the loss, allowing 4 runs in his 6 innings of work. Prior to last night's game, Mussina was 3-2 in 8 starts against Martinez, allowing no more than 3 runs and pitching at least 6 innings in each of those starts.

The runs for the Mets came in an odd fashion last night. In the 2nd inning, the Mets had three sacrifice flies, becoming the first team in the National League to have three sac flies in an inning. How did they get three? A fly ball to Bernie Williams would have allowed a run to score but Williams misplayed the ball and didn't catch it. The inning was extended with the error and the play was still scored a sacrifice.

In the 9th inning, the Yankees made a bid to come back against Braden Looper but came up short. Looper, who has shown Armando Benitez like qualities for the Mets, allowed 2 runs in his one inning of work.

The two teams play again this afternoon with Tom Glavine matched up against Sean Henn.
