The Yankees edged the Texas Rangers 2-1 yesterday behind eight-plus innings from Mike Mussina to increase their lead in the AL East to 2 1/2 games over the Red Sox. "Everything went right," Mussina conceded. "I can't complain about much of anything." The Yanks have now won 11 of 13. Mariano Rivera allowed one run and surrendered back-to-back two-out singles in the ninth before earning his 23rd save.
Mussina (7-4) struck out 10 and won his sixth straight decision thanks to solo homers from Bernie Williams in the fourth and Jason Giambi in the eighth. Giambi, who came off the DL before the game, was eager to return to the field, "It was fun to get back in there, and it came at a good time with Sheff being sick and a few guys being beat up," Giambi said.
The Yankees are currently battling through a rash of injuries in their line up, including Kenny Lofton, Gary Sheffield and Derek Jeter. Jeter strained his left groin on Friday night and according to a team spokesman is a longshot candidate for the DL. The Yankees aren't sure how close their captain is to coming back, but manager Joe Torre seems willing to wait it out. "You have to look at it and see where he is at that point," Torre said. "I certainly don't want to think about DLing him if it's going to be even 10 days."
