- Tigers 5, Yankees 4: Filling in for Andy Pettitte, Sergio Mitre didn't do quite enough. He lasted 4 1/3 innings -- Joe Girardi said he would do cartwheels if Mitre finished five innings -- allowing four runs, striking out four and walking three. The Yankees caught a break when Brad Thomas started in lieu of Dontrelle Willis, who was suffering flu-like symptoms. How come no one ever has the actual flu? A group of six Detroit pitchers held the Yankees to four runs, two of which came on a Mark Teixeira home run. Johnny Damon, playing as the designated hitter, had a homer against his former mates.
- Nationals 3, Mets 2: Back-to-back homers by Adam Kennedy and Ryan Zimmerman put the Mets in an early hole, and they couldn't get much done against Nationals starter Luis Atilano. John Maine through 114 pitches through six innings -- he walked four -- and took the loss. Pedro Feliciano gave up what would prove to be a critical insurance run in the eighth, and Jose Reyes was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Luis Castillo (single) and Angel Pagan (solo homer) accounted for the Mets runs.
