- Yankees 11, Royals 5: Good thing the Yankees didn't make that Alex Rodriguez for Ervin Santana move this offseason. Rodriguez hit two homers -- Nos. 50 and 51 -- as the Yankees cruised past the Royals. Detroit beat Seattle again, so the wild-card lead stands at three games. Johnny Damon, who looked like a corpse for most of the season, has played better of late. He socked his 10th homer as the Yankees gave plenty of support to Andy Pettitte. When Joe Torre lets Chris Britton pitch in a game, things must be going really well or really poorly. On Saturday, it was the former.
- Mets 3, Astros 1: Tom Glavine said he "didn't feel great." Despite such problems, he carried a perfect game into the sixth and helped the Mets cruise to their second straight win over the Astros. Rodriguez may have sealed the American League MVP award, but look at the year David Wright is having. He should be among the front-runners in the NL. His homer helped the Mets to a season-high 19 games over .500.
- Justine Henin took care of Svetlana Kuznetsova to win the U.S. Open title in straight sets. She didn't just win the final in straight sets, she went a perfect 14-0 in her seven matches. Is it too much to ask to see a compelling women's final every once in a while? There hasn't been a third set at the U.S. Open since 1995. The French Open has had six consecutive straight-sets wins. The Australian Open's streak is five, with Wimbledon's just two. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will try to put on a better show Sunday after both won in -- yep -- straight sets in their semifinals.
