This week, we're launching Gothamist's travel content, Gothamist Getaways. Four times a year, we'll have a week of posts featuring looks at travel, food, products and tips, near and far, for making your trips more pleasurable. So enjoy and let us know if you have any hints for us—email [email protected].
It's no fun being single in this city, and dating in New York—whether it be through mutual friends, your mother's friend's setups or the dreaded Tinder hookup—is almost always a miserable experience. But before you start booking your flight to San Francisco's Singles Week, here are a few vacation options sure to help throw water on your dating dry spell.
THE SHARE HOUSE TRIP: There are a bunch of nearby towns rife with vacationing young professionals on the prowl. The Jersey Shore town of Seaside Heights, on the mend after getting decimated during Hurricane Sandy, is still stocked with reasonably-priced rentals, plus there are plenty of bars around town for hooking up with hotties on holiday. Ocean Beach on Fire Island's another good spot for singles, boasting beautiful beaches, affordable rentals and lots of shopping, restaurants and room for long, romantic walks at sunset. And if you're willing to travel a little farther, Rehoboth Beach in Delaware is a hot spot for singles and has a pretty hopping gay scene; you can rent a house here.
THE SINGLES CRUISE: It sounds hokey, but there are a lot of benefits to hitting up a singles cruise. You get to travel to far and exotic lands with a bunch of new buddies, food is all-inclusive and there are lots of fun activities to do on and off the boat, so even if you don't end up getting down in the cabin with a new companion, you can swim, snorkel and otherwise frolic seaside. Sites like SinglesCruise.com and VacationsToGo.com offer deals on cruises catering to everyone from the 20s-30s gang to the over 40-set. And though there's currently only one New York-based cruise on deck right now, the offerings get updated regularly, and there are plenty of other trips that leave from places like Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
THE GETAWAY WEEKEND: If your prime teen dating months were spent sneaking into the boys' bunks at sleepaway camp, Club Getaway offers singles weekends at its sports-and-adventure resort in the Berkshires. Weekends are tailored to everyone from young professionals to Jewish singles to older folks, and feature outdoorsy activities like hiking and waterskiing along with some more hookup-conducive fun. like beer pong, dinner parties and late night campfires.
And if none of these work for you, there's always the option of touring Europe for a month with an OKCupid match.
