One of the great secrets of New York is the Panorama of the City of New York—an awe-inspiring model that very few New Yorkers visit. The panorama is quite majestic and definitely worth a visit to Flushing Meadows. Tucked away in Queens Museum of Art, the model was commissioned by the uber-city planner Robert Moses for the 1964 World’s Fair.

The model spans 9,335 square feet and includes every single building built before 1992 in all five boroughs, totaling 895,000 structures. Housed in its own room, the panorama is ringed with a dramatic walkway that allows visitors to circle all five boroughs as the lights dim and glow, recreating sunrise and sunset in this miniature New York.

The preceding post is part of the Gothamist Fall Guide, sponsored by Lexus.
