In his last outing for the Mets, Victor Zambrano barely made it out of the first inning. With only 43 pitches thrown in the loss to the Brewers, it figures Zambrano would be well rested in his start against the Cubs yesterday. It looks like all that rest might have paid off. Zambrano came within one inning of the first complete game of his career as the Mets won 6-1 and swept the 3-game series. Zambrano and the Mets defeated Carlos Zambrano, who is unrelated to Victor but also from Venezuela. The Cubs' Zambrano who has been better than the Mets' Zambrano, was 8-4 with a 3.24 ERA entering the game and had not lost since June 22nd.
The sweep helps the Mets stay close in the NL Wild Card race. They are 3 games behind Houston and trailing three other NL East teams as well. The Wild Card may be the only hope for the Mets as they trail the Braves by 6.5 games, which isn't an insurmountable lead, but the Mets haven't had much success at beating the Braves.
And besides the common name and nationality, there are more fun Zambrano facts: both are righties, both wear the number 38, and entering last night's game, both had 42 wins. By the end of the season, both will probably be on teams that are watching the playoffs from home.
