A new pizza restaurant funded by Kickstarter opened in Clinton Hill last week, bringing wood-fired pies, pastas and desserts to the neighborhood. Emily, named for one half of the husband and wife duo Matt and Emily Hyland who run the place, turns out the kind of bubbly, thin crust pies made popular by the likes of Motorino and Roberta's, topped in most cases with chef Matt's homemade mozzarella. The Hylands have previously had a hand in launching Brooklyn Central, as well as cooking with mobile pie vendor Pizza Motto; this will be the couple's first solo venture.
Red sauce pies include The Camp Randall ($16) with sausage, mushrooms peppers and squeaky cheese curds; The Red Planet ($7) with double sauce, mixed herbs, garlic and basil; and the meatfest known as RM3! ($19) topped with fontina, pepperoni, sausage and prosciutto. Tomato-phobes should try the namesake Emily pie ($19) with mozzarella, taleggio, pistachios, truffle spread and honey or the wildly flavorful Angie ($15) with fig jam, blue cheese, cured ham and arugula.
Besides pizzas, salads like a Kale with dried cherries ($9) and an Arugula with citrus and toasted nuts ($9) balance out a cheese overload. A hearty sausage dish with cheese grits ($12) gets a turn in the oven, as do pastas like Trumpets with duck ragu ($14) and Spaghetti with 'nduja (spreadable sausage from Italy), uni and pistachio ($16). You'd be remiss to not finish a meal here with an order of the S'mores Calzone ($10), stuffed with marshmallow and chocolate and coated with pulverized Graham cracker.
