Astoria's getting a spinoff of popular Williamsburg restaurant Tikka Indian Grill, which opened earlier this year to a nightly packed house. At the time, owner Syed Hossain told us he'd be opening an even more casual spot to sell Indian street foods, and now he's done it with Tikka Roll House, currently in soft open mode with the grand opening this Wednesday.
As the name indicates, nizami rolls (essentially kati rolls from Kolkata) are a big part of the operation, with nearly a dozen different fillings varieties in both meat and vegetarian preparations to be stuffed into the thin, buttery bread. The classic Aloo Chana Roll combines potato and chickpeas rolled with onions, cilantro, lime and chaat masala; the Malai Murg Roll uses chicken that's been skewered and roasted.
Like his Williamsburg restaurant, Hossain's employing a Bangladeshi chef, Muhammad Kabir Mia, to execute a menu that spans both India and Bangladesh. Biryanis, tandoori chicken and Paanch Phoran Jhinga—shrimp tossed in a fenugreek seed, nigella seed, cumin seed, black mustard seed and fennel seed sauce—are dishes that both men would have eaten growing up.
Tikka Roll House's BYOB for now, with no corkage fee.
