Tough times for the site of Brooklyn's oldest bar, which was allegedly seized this morning by the City Marshal. Carroll Gardens's Goldenrod, which opened last summer in the former P. J. Hanley's—considered Brooklyn's oldest bar from its birth in 1874—has been shuttered by the city, reports Brownstoner. Owner James McGown had declared bankruptcy last year, but the bar had remained opened until today.
A call to South Brooklyn Pizza, a venture also operated by McGown in a neighboring space, went unanswered, so it's unclear whether that space may be affected as well. Dubbed the "bankruptcy baron" by Crains, McGown has a reputation for this kind of thing; it's possible that unapproved alterations made to the bar may be responsible for the current dispute. Hopefully a more stable tenant can take up the mantle operating this important piece of Brooklyn's beer guzzling history.
