It's a bit confusing that, until now, the Rockaway Brewing Co. has been operating in Long Island City, but the group has now returned to its Rockaway roots this summer, opening a new tap room and hang space in the Arverne section of the peninsula. This past weekend, the team flung open the doors at Beach 72nd Street on an industrial-type space where people can hang, sip some pints and chill out to some reggae music before, during, or after a day spent soaking up the rays on the beach.
There were four beers on offer opening weekend, including Da Beach, a hoppy session type with a 4.8% ABV for longevity and an English Style Ale at 6.4% ABV for winding down the day. No Nitro Black Gold in sight, but milk stouts are a tough sell on a hot day.
Nearby Goody's BBQ Chicken & Ribs was on hand serving their namesake chicken with jerk sauce in addition to some grilled burgers. Additionally, Nae's Italian cycled through for some lemon, coconut, mango and other flavors of ices.
As it's closer to the bay side, be prepared for about a half mile walk to the boardwalk and about a mile to Rippers. As far as sipping Rockaway brews in a beach environment, this'll be the big operation, as plans for an urban beach in Ridgewood are currently on hold until all the proper permits and such can be acquired.
415 Beach 72nd Street, Arverne. Open Monday - Thursday 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday - Sunday noon to 10 p.m.
