DUMBO's dining scene, which has always been scattershot at best, inches further toward legitimacy with the announcement of another high-end eatery debuting this fall on the waterfront. A bunch of restaurateurs with notable restaurants have banded together to form a super group of sorts from which they'll launch Celestine, an "Eastern Mediterranean" restaurant debuting adjacent to a newly-completed section of Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Opening at the One John Street, a new residential building next to the Manhattan Bridge offering, for a price, "the last 42 homes on the DUMBO waterfront," Celestine is a partnership between Noah Bernamoff of Mile End and Black Seed; Garett McMahan formerly of Perilla; Joe Campanale, the restaurateur taking over the former Franny's space; and Julian Brizzi, who owns Rucola and co-owns Grand Army with Bernamoff. Garett McMahan, who spent nine years also at Perilla, will do the cooking.
"The menu of seasonal, soulful, and healthful Eastern Mediterranean fare will draw flavors and influence from Sicily to Beirut, and all paths in between," according to materials released to the press. The focal point of the kitchen will be the six-foot, wood-burning grill for cooking fish and flatbreads; mezze and dips are also promised.
Celestine joins recently-opened Cecconi's in taking advantage of DUMBO's unique views of Manhattan and, in particular, the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. "It’s pretty stunning when you get there," Brizzi told Eater. "We hope to open a restaurant that’s worthy of going of regardless of the view."
