Like so many Red Hook establishments, the rightly beloved restaurant Fort Defiance sustained heavy damage during Hurricane Sandy and has yet to reopen. According to owner St. John Frizell, "Our basement was completely submerged in flood water, and much equipment and inventory was lost. Our insurance company isn’t giving us one thin dime, and all the government offers are disaster loans." But Frizell's spirit is not broken—last night at 6 p.m. he started slow-roasting a 130-pound pig donated from Pino Prime Meats and this very afternoon he's carving it up outside his restaurant.
St. Frizell tells us that starting at 3 p.m. he'll be serving Pork Sandwiches for $6 and plates of pork for $14. The plates come with red beans, braised greens and cornbread. To wash it down, there will be Sixpoint beer on tap inside. All proceeds go to help Fort Defiance get back on its feet. And after you've had your fill on swine, there will be free shuttle buses run by IKEA to the Bell House, where Rosanne Cash and others are playing a benefit show tonight to raise money for more Red Hook businesses. Tickets are still available.
As for when Fort Defiance will reopen, St. Frizell tells us, "We're trying to open for some kind of business on Saturday. What exactly we do will depend on our refrigeration guys and the ice machine situation. We may not have a full menu but we will reopen on Saturday." [Via Grub Street]
