The Department of Health has closed down Congee Chinese Restaurant at 98 Bowery after discovering many alarming violations during an inspection last week. The restaurant—not to be confused with the other once troubled Congee Village nearby—racked up 65 points on the September 18th visit, which led inspectors to shut the doors until issues could be rectified, reports DNAinfo.
On the visit, inspectors discovered several critical violations deemed especially egregious. Among them, food not held at the proper temperatures; dirty food contact surfaces; and the old stand buys: roaches and rats. Oh, and don't forget the filth flies!

As DNAinfo points out, Congee Chinese Restaurant has been lauded by everyone from the New York Times to the Village Voice, including a "best new Chinese restaurant" designation by the latter in 2003. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Nobody answered a call to the restaurant this evening, so it's likely still closed for repairs, so to speak. Get well soon, Congee!
