The former wine director at Riddling Widow, Ravi DeRossi's subterranean bubbly bar, opens a different champagne-focused bar and restaurant this Wednesday in the bi-level MacDougal Street space. Ariel Arce will open Air's Champagne Parlour in the former Ladybird space—another of DeRossi's properties that was formerly his fondue restaurant Bourgeois Pig—which is above Riddling Widow. She'll be opening a separate entity in the Riddling Widow space later this summer. Keeping up with the shuffle? Let's soldier on.
Champagne's reputation as a cost prohibitive, special occasion-only beverage is something Acre hopes to dispel by offering bottles at more manageable price points to the everyday drinker. The menu is laid out in styles like "50 Under 50," "Geeky and Niche," and "Personalized Flights," which staff will serve from a cart that motors around the dining area. Champagne by the glass, cocktails, still wine and beer are also on offer.
Bubbly-friendly bites include raw oysters and hamachi tartare, tuna conserva and charcuterie including liver mousse and speck. The Caviar Service—dramatically illustrated in the attached gallery—can be either Trout Roe, Grinnell (bowfish), or American Sturgeon. The champagne cart will be joined by a cheese cart, where guests can choose from a selection of fromage.
The space has a boudoir-esque vibe, with draped curtains, exotic plants and Art Deco-inspired design flourishes. All that's missing is a chaise longue upon which to drape oneself while languidly awaiting the next visit from your bubbly cart.
