Damn you Starbucks! Just as the coffee giant is off raising prices, it goes and starts making plans to sell a lot more booze. But not in the Northeast. Yet.
Today Reuters is reporting that the the Seattle coffee purveyor has had enough luck selling beer, wine and fancy foods like hot flatbreads at outlets in Seattle and Portland that they are getting ready to expand the program nationwide. But slowly. Five wet 'bucks should be in Chicago by the end of the year and four-to-six similar outlets will be heading to Atlanta and SoCal by the end of the year (no word from the company on when they might try to bring 'em to NY). It isn't the first fast fooder to do so, Chipotle's been selling beer for ages.
And while we have a strong hunch that a lot of local coffee/wine bars around the country are going to hate this news, we say look on the bright side! This just means the kind of people who would want to drink wine at Starbucks soon enough won't be invading your space! Win-win!
