There is officially zero excuse for eating fast food in New York City: the number of restaurants has increased by 42 percent, from 5,610 to 7,966 between 1999 and 2009. The Lower East Side had the biggest growth of restaurants, at 233 sit-down joints compared to Williamsburg's 130 and Park Slope's 108. Do restaurants and ironic mustaches grow together?
According to the Post's analysis of the Census numbers, a "Little Italy-SoHo area" zip code had the most restaurants in the city, with 331, followed by the East Village and Hell's Kitchen-Midtown West. Only 18 out of the 176 zip codes in the city saw a drop in eateries, the largest being on the Upper East Side, which lost 66. Monocle retailers on the UES, however, have been doing just fine.
