Manzanilla, a new Spanish brasserie from restauranteur Yann de Rochefort, has officially opened on Park Avenue South in Gramercy. Like de Rochefort's other Spanish venture—the multi-location tapas spot Boqueria—Manzanilla's space provides an elegant setting for a meal while still being convivial and welcoming. The striking herringbone-patterned floor is softened by cozy booth seats and warm earth tones throughout the main dining area; a private dining space, located downstairs next to the wine cellar, is well-suited for larger groups seeking an intimate environment to enjoy chef Dani Garcia's Andalusian-inspired cuisine.
Though tasting and prix fixe menus appear at many fine dining restaurants, chef Garcia chooses to focus on the more traditional three-course meal, with a small menu of snacks, appetizers and entrees. While rooted in Spanish flavors and presentations, Garcia's menu translates easily to a New York palate, with plenty of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Starters include Pulpo a la Gallega ($13), a smoked octopus dish with potatoes and spicy pimenton and a Kale Salad ($14) with poached quail eggs, Valdeon blue cheese, puffed wheat and almonds in a black olive dressing. Main dishes are centered around fish, rice and pork, like the Black Rice ($26) with Bomba rice, squid ink, shrimp, cuttlefish ribbons and a citrus aioli and the slow roasted, Fossil Farms Suckling Pig ($34) with cracklings, served on top of a butternut squash puree.
Yelpers are already praising the extensive wine list, composed by wine director Rick Pitcher, who focuses on both larger production and artisanal Spanish wines and other European vineyards. The restaurant also features an impressive collection of sherries and craft cocktails like the Ensenada Meets Marbella with Espolon Blanco tequila, Alvear Carlso VII Amontillado, grapefruit, grapefruit salt and lime.
345 Park Avenue South at 26th Street; (212) 255-4086; Open nightly for dinner nightly.
