Mystic Pizza, the quintessential 1980s coming-of-age film that created uncomfortable sexual tension between 18-year-olds and fathers of the children they babysit nationwide, is based on a real Mystic Pizza establishment in Connecticut. And it turns out IRL Mystic Pizza isn't doing such a good job of paying IRL Kat, Daisy and Jojo—they've been fined by the Connecticut Department of Labor for allegedly failing to pay employees adequate wages.
The pizzeria's proprietor, John Zelepos, reportedly had to hand out $105,165.94 in back pay, after state officials discovered about 110 of his employees were earning less than minimum wage. Investigators found he paid some of them as little as $5.69 per hour between May 2012 and June 2014, and some employees were forced to work 93 hours per week, with poorly paid overtime.
Three employees filed complaints against Zelepos, who also had to pay the government $23,400 in fines.
