Moby! The musician, DJ and animal rights activist returns to the NYC dining scene as a partner in Ravi DeRossi's revamp of Ladybird, the vegan restaurant he founded in the former Bourgeois Pig space in 2016. Moby previously co-owned Teany in NYC, which closed in 2015, but has been active in the vegan scene in L.A., where he owns Little Pine. Go ahead and press play on the exquisite Moby/Gwen Stefani collab "Southside" below to get fully immersed in the Moby-verse.
Derrick Styczek acts as consulting chef at the new location, which continues the tapas tradition but introduces what ownership describes as a dining experience "designed and structured in the way of a traditional sushi menu." That means ticking boxes on a list of base ingredients, which are transformed with supplemental spices, ingredients and seasonings. Think Potato gussied up with leeks, crème fraîche and garlic ($9); Carrots with pistachios and grapefruit in a citrus-miso glaze; and breaded and fried Eggplant served parmigiana-style with tomato sauce, ricotta and fresh basil ($14).
The Bourgeois Pig offered decadent, cheesy fondues and Ladybird continues in that tradition with three vegan varieties meant for two diners, including a very traditional chardonnay and artichoke ($38) and another made with sun-dried tomato and basil ($40).
Cocktails—helmed by Jane Danger (Mother of Pearl, Cienfuegos) and Alla Lapushchik (Post Office, OTB)—will each include some kind of vegetable in juice, infusion or garnish form.
DeRossi's been a busy bee over the past few years, opening new vegan restaurants and transforming some of his existing restaurants to meet his vegan ideals. He's also behind the East Village cocktail bar that donates all its proceeds to organizations threatened by the Trump administration's actions.
