Chef Marcus Samuelsson's portfolio of trendy Harlem restaurants will expand to Brooklyn, with the debut of a new restaurant inside a forthcoming condo development opening in Greenpoint.
Known most recently for his Red Rooster empire that spawned an underground music venue and a spinoff rotisserie outlet uptown, Samuelsson now looks across the river for his next installment. According to the NY Post, a new Samuelsson joint will open inside The Greenpoint, a waterfront development at 21 India Street. The new restaurant will reportedly occupy 4,000-square-feet with an "alfresco dining terrace overlooking the river."
"There's so much to learn and love about Brooklyn. I'm thrilled to get to be a part of the food scene there," Samuelsson told Gothamist. "It's a great opportunity to be a part of this development and to build something totally new, fun and fitting for the Greenpoint waterfront."
The details of what kind of restaurant this will be weren't immediately released.
As a dispiriting aside, preview descriptions of The Greenpoint describe an "amenity-rich lifestyle" for future residents moving to the "famously cozy neighborhood" that will be infinitely less cozy with the arrival of a giant glass middle finger along the historically low-rise waterfront.
Samuelsson joins other famous chefs and restaurateurs like Missy Robbins (Lilia) and Andrew Carmellini (Leuca) in opening ventures in Williamsburg and, now, Greenpoint. Noma co-founder and Nordic rising star Fredrick Berselius opened a Greenpoint restaurant earlier in 2017, adding to Berselius's Williamsburg footprint. Previously, Paul Liebrandt made a go of the area; looking forward, April Bloomfield will open an outpost of her Salvation Taco in the neighborhood sometime in the near future.
