Storied restaurant Le Bernardin has debuted its first satellite venture with Aldo Sohm Wine Bar, a more casual but energetic space named after the restaurant's wine director. Where Sohm, chef Eric Ripert and co-owner Maguy Le Coze created a luxurious, precise and elegant experience at Le Bernardin, the Wine Bar seeks a more laid-back atmosphere that doesn't compromise on class.
That all begins with the decor, which leaps off the walls, ceilings and floors in bursts of color and neat pattern. There are wine bottles and glasses on display, made artistic by the objects and paintings that surround them. What could pass for a museum space gets softened by the large, central couch, providing a more relaxed setting than the white tablecloths next door.
The Austrian-born Sohm made sure the wine list was punctuated by more affordable bottles so it's not just a special occasion spot. You can score bottles in the $30 range with small plates and entrees to match. Ripert had his hands on the lunch and dinner menus, which feature dishes like the liver-on-a-stick Grilled Foie Gras Lollipop ($15), Whole Baked Cauliflower ($12) with chicken salt and Warm Goat Cheese Potatoe Parfait ($12).
151 West 51st Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, (212) 554-1143; website. Open for lunch Monday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with dinner service Monday through Thursday until 11:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday until midnight. Closed Sunday.
