If you want to see the interior of the mythic Rainbow Room above Rockefeller Center become a landmark, your time to speak up is coming fast. As expected, the Landmarks Preservation Commission yesterday decided to move forward with discussions of landmarking the iconic skyscraper interior (presumably against owner Tishman Speyer's wishes) which means it is time for some public testimony!
Come Tuesday, September 11, the Commission will be taking the pulse of the public regarding the 65th-floor space and its gorgeous revolving dance floor, domed ceiling and Art Deco details. After the hearing the Commission will most likely make a final decision on the 1934 space in a matter of weeks.
The Rainbow Room, arguably one of the most famous nightlife spaces in New York City, has been closed for the past three years while Tishman Speyer figures out what to do with it. The last operators, the Ciprianis, were kicked out in 2008. Since then Tishman Speyer has reportedly done a bunch of work on the non-ballroom rooms and has intermittently appeared to have reached out to restaurateurs to run the space—but with nothing to show for it.
E-mails to Tishman Speyer for comment on the possible landmarking have not been returned.
