Landlord "Pushes Out" Gramercy's Ess-A-Bagel After 39 Years

The original Gramercy location of bagel and spread emporium Ess-A-Bagel has only a few weeks left in business before they're unceremoniously tossed out of their 39-year-old home. The schmear shop—along with neighboring businesses Grill 21 and Rose Restaurant—are being forced out after the landlord declined to renew their leases, reports Town & Village. "It's endemic of the city; they’re pushing out independent businesses," declared Ess-A-Bagel owner David Wilpon. And how.
The shop will have until the end of January to wrap up business and move out and Wilpon hopes to find another space to re-home the bagelry, ideally somewhere close by. There's also a Hail Mary hope that the shop can stay, as Wilpon has requested a holdover and is currently negotiating with the landlord. A request for comment from owner L&M Development Partners was not immediately returned.
But if that fails, don't worry! New tenants are already lined up for the new space, including another bagel shop (why?) called Tower Bagels and...a Bank of America. RIP NYC.
