Since New York's 85-year-old law regulating the sale of kosher foods was struck down by a Brooklyn federal judge in 2000, the state's observant Jews have had no way of verifying that a product labelled "kosher" was actually prepared according to their religious needs. Recently Newsday reported that an all-star task force assembled by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver - who keeps kosher - and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer - who doesn't - is nearing completion of its work to put together a new, constitutional system for regulating kosher food.

Under the new law, manufacturers will have to document their claims that their food is indeed kosher, and face stiff fines for failing to comply. The statute will be in full effect by January 1, 2005.
