John Oliver and Last Week Tonight popped in from their holiday hiatus to deliver a web exclusive questioning America's oddest Thanksgiving tradition: the Presidential turkey pardon. The annual symbolic bird exoneration, which takes place in the days before the holiday, "spares" a turkey (sometimes two) from the dinner table fate, allowing it to live out its natural life on a farm somewhere. Ironically, most of the freed birds die within a year.
Enough, says Oliver. "If we're going to pardon one turkey, we should pardon them all; or, we should put them all on trial."
As a great man once said: "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword." So grab that axe, Mr. President! The last thing anyone wants is a President who's soft on turkeys.
