The space that once filled our bellies with vegan cheese steaks and non-dairy milkshakes now brings Williamsburg warm house bread with cultured butter and Iberico lardo with brazil nuts. Four Horseman, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy's new wine bar, opened a little over a week ago on Grand Street, touting all-natural wines and a food menu by Franny's vet Nick Curtola. Given that the Apocalypse has already arrived in the area, maybe these are the four horsemen of...adulthood?
Murphy serves as Founding Partner and also did the sound engineering in the room for acoustic superiority and keeping the rock out of sleeping neighbor's ears. The natural wood, Scandinavian-looking interior design was created by Ole Sondrese—who's responsible for several Ditmas Park operations like Mimi's Hummus and Sycamore—with an eye on sustainable architecture and materials.
The wine program is a collaboration between all six parties involved, who say the selection is "personal" and "comprised of wines that we think are delicious and like to drink." As for the food, Curtola's focusing on vegetable-based dishes accented by a few meaty offerings, similarly to the bar's neighbor Semilla up on Havemeyer. Expect to try Turnips with greens, cured egg yolk and buckwheat ($13); Roasted Carrots with stracciatella, cilantro and Thai peppercorns ($13); and a large Pork Shank with shelling beans, salsa verde, zucchini, porcini mushrooms and a spring onion salad ($40).
295 Grand Street, Williamsburg, 718-599-4900; website. Open 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Dinner served daily from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with an abbreviated menu afterwards.
