A world away from the din of the class warriors and rabble-rousers at Zuccotti Park and Union Square, there's a new oasis of elegance and refinement called NoMad, a flashy new restaurant selling $22 carrots and bottle service in a library. It's getting a lot of buzz because, in addition to its luxuriant design, the kitchen is run by award-winning Chef Daniel Humm and restaurateur Will Guidara, of Eleven Madison Park, one of the most acclaimed restaurants in town. Here's a fun video tour which NoMad released last week, inspired by that famously long steadicam shot in Goodfellas:
NoMad from Eleven Madison Park on Vimeo.
The restaurant is part of theNoMad Hotel on the corner of Broadway and 28th Street, tucked away inside a turn-of-the-century Beaux-Arts building that's been restored by French designer Jacques Garcia. As you can see, the ceilings are "soaring," the fireplace is roaring, and the library is anything but boring. The restaurant is comprised of several distinct spaces, including an atrium poised under a pyramidal glass roof; a central dining room decked out with dark oak, framed pressed antique herbs from the French heritage shop Deyrolle, and a fireplace imported from a great French château; and a library where throughout the day light fare and finger foods are served alongside coffee, tea, wine and cocktails during the day.
At night, the library—with its 24-foot-long mahogany bar—becomes a full-on upscale cocktail lounge, with a menu of "classic and proprietary cocktails" from award winning-mixologist Leo Robitschek (another Eleven Madison Park vet). The drink menu is quite extensive (see below) and is complemented by a high roller cart: a bottle of booze for $250 or $275 comes with three different mixers of your choice to make cocktails with. The perfect accompaniment for some light reading about the Draft Riots, perhaps?
About those $22 carrots: That's an entree, and they're served oven-roasted with cumin, wheatberries, and crispy duck skin. Other menu options include a beef entree with bone marrow crusted with royal trumpets (mushrooms) and parsnips ($36), and Asparagus Bread Salad with smoked potato ecrasse & black truffle. Appetizers include Poached Egg with asparagus, quinoa, and parmesan ($17); Smoked Trout with with cucumber, buttermilk, and rye ($18); and Beef Tartare with cornichons and horseradish ($16). Take out your diamond-encrusted monocle from your velveteen waistcoat and peruse all the menus below at your infinite leisure.
