Granduca di Sicilia, a new Italian ristorante, brings old world charm—and classic Southern Italian specialties—to the Flatiron. New York has no shortage of pizza, but Granduca rises above with its Sicilian pies hot out of the wood-burning brick oven and seafood pastas like capellini with sea urchins and bottarga.

Signature pizzas include the Stromboli (mozzarella, tomato sauce, radicchio rosso, smoked Italian bacon, fontina cheese, basil, and extra virgin olive oil) and the Taormina (mozzarella, tomato sauce, artichokes, mushrooms, ham, anchovies, capers, basil, extra virgin olive oil). For mains, try grilled swordfish with sautéed spinach and salmoriglio sauce. Finish with Canoli di Ricotta with chocolate and pistachio powder or Cassata Siciliana, a traditional Sicilian cake with liqueur, candied fruit, and chocolate for dessert. Bellissima!

Part of a family of restaurants, the Granduca di Sicilia opened on Thursday in Flatiron as the fourth location for restauranteur Ettore Manuli. The original Granduca can be found in a 15th century manor owned by a noble family in the small Sicilian city of Taormina, with others in St. Maarten and Midtown Manhattan. The New York restaurant’s rustic décor pays tribute to the historic surroundings of its Sicilian sister, with handmade tiles from the town of Caltagirone and a boat with fishing nets to serve at the centerpiece in the main dining room.
