We've never had the pleasure of visiting the Grand Prospect Hall but after decades of their charming DIY commercials, it's as if we know it intimately. Now there's reason to go even if nuptials aren't on the docket, as they're opening a brand new beer garden tomorrow afternoon. South Slope News stopped by to get an early look at the new space, which has been dubbed the Brooklyn Bavarian Biergarten in a nod to the neighborhood's once robust German population.
"This year-round 21-and-over garden of fun offers lots of distinctive indoor and outdoor space with easy access to ice-cold drinks and mouth-watering food," according to owner Michael Halkias. The landmarked space features several waterfalls, both an indoor and outdoor drinking area and even a stuffed horse that's hopefully fake.
According to their website, the beer garden will include 24 taps pouring local brews like Flagship, Sixpoint and Bronx Brewery in addition to German favorites, plus four varietals from Red Hook Winery. They've got a fully stocked bar, as well, with a promise that, "if you want it, our mixologist can create it!" They really do make dreams come true.
They're also doing a big menu of gut-busting German pub grub including four different types of sausages, chicken or veal schnitzel, spatzle and flavored pretzels. The "Brooklyn Favorites" section includes jalapeno poppers, mozzarella sticks and chicken wings. Sorry, no fried bologna.
263 Prospect Avenue, (718) 788-0777; website. Open Tuesday - Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday 4 p.m. to 1 a.m.; Saturday noon to 1 a.m.; Sunday noon to 11 p.m. Closed Mondays.
