The Mondrian SoHo is opening a new "coastal Italian" restaurant called Isola Trattoria & Crudo Bar in its glamorous 5,000-square-foot greenhouse room this Friday. Executive Chef Victor LaPlaca, a native of Sicily, will be serving a simple and seasonal menu inspired by the flavors of his home. “The menu at Isola is an authentic reflection of the cuisine I grew up eating and preparing along the Italian coastline,” LaPlaca explains.
Options from Isola's Crudo Bar include Tuna with White Balsamic, Compressed Melon, and Pine Nuts; and Snapper with Cantaloupe, Fuji Apple, and Pickled Red Jalapeno. The menu (below) also has a range of pizzas, pastas, and antipasta, such as the Salumi & Formaggi Misti with Truffled Lardo, Honeycomb, Violet Mustard & Sullivan St. Bread. To pair, the restaurant's wine list features 36 carefully curated wines by the glass and 100 selections by the bottle originating from all over Coastal Italy, Sicily, Greece, Spain, and Southern France.
With interiors inspired by the Boboli Gardens in Florence, the spacious room glitters with chandeliers and glass sculptures, but the communal tables and casual design layout seems more fitting for the home-style cuisine and fresh Crudos. Whether any of this will dispel the pall cast by the hotel's critically-panned first attempt, Imperial No. 9, remains to be seen. But the price point, for starters, is certainly more palatable.
