After months of increasing tension between mobile food vendors and brick-and-mortar restaurants (plus some very cranky little old ladies) on the Upper West Side, area cops are seriously cracking down on the vendors. Here's a look at their latest tactics designed to run the trucks and carts straight out of town.
Cops are teaming up with the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and FDNY to stake out out vendors and watch them like a hawk for any "repeat" violations, reports DNAinfo. The cops plan to give the judge of the Midtown Community Court a special alert whenever repeat offenders arrive, so that the judge may smite them with heavy fines or forced community service. The cops are also making routine street checks, picking up any generators or gas containers they say are being used illegally. So, food trucks: hide your kids, your wife, and your fuel supply if you want to make it out of this thing alive.
These latest measures come on the heels of UWS City Councilwoman Gale Brewer introducing new legislation designed to curb the spread of the vendors, many of whom migrated to the neighborhood after being kicked out of Midtown earlier this year. Counter-measures have sprung up, too, like the Save The Food Truck campaign, which is collecting signatures from street food lovers right this way.
