A new spot for Italian food has opened in the Flatiron, as Tre Stelle made its official debut yesterday, serving up fresh pastas and regional specialties from Chef Stefano Ferro's hometown in Liguria, Italy. The emphasis, as with many Italian-style restaurants, is on family. The three "stars" in the name refer to the chef's three children, and the restaurant revolves around the idea that the best meals come when "we gather together with friends and family to sip a glass of wine and catch up on our lives over a plate of pasta," as owner Roberto Cavagnaro puts it.

To that end, the menu focuses on simple yet flavorful combinations, like steamed shrimp with cannellini beans to start and a veal tagliata served with tomatoes and broccoli. Carbohydrates shine brightly in traditional combinations of gnocchi with pesto and spaghetti carbonara (made tableside, here) and the intriguing gnocchi dishes: one with with shrimp and tomatoes in an almond sauce, another with lamb in a bitter chocolate sauce. All the dishes are cream-free—though butter and cheese do appear frequently on the menu—making pasta a slighty less guilty pleasure. Prices are typical for the area, with pastas ranging from $10 to $24 and most entrees hovering around $28.

When it comes to the decor, futuristic touch likes orbed light fixtures and slatted wall coverings blend with supple leather chairs and a few pinup-style drawings. Paintings from Italian artist Andrea Rusin adorn the walls, lending pops of color to a mostly neutral-toned dining area.

The restaurant opens daily at 7 a.m. with a brunch service on the weekends. The bar serves an assortment of mostly Italian wines, beers and specialty cocktails, with the added bonus of a complimentary cheese, meat, frittata and bread plate with the purchase of any wine or cocktail during happy hour.

39 West 24th Street // 212-255-4644 // Open Daily 7 a.m. to 1 a.m.
