Chef Michael Psilakis has added a Williamsburg location to his fleet of MP Taverna restaurants, joining outposts in Astoria and two out on Long Island. The Driggs Avenue digs opened this week in the north end of the neighborhood with 120 seats and a neutral-toned, wood-heavy design that transformed a former warehouse into something suitable for eating. There are even burlap chandeliers—this is Brooklyn!
The menu leans Greek, naturally, with dishes meant to be shared amongst diners. Peruse the large meze selection and you'll find things like Grilled Calamari ($13), Braised Tongue ($15) and both vegan ($12) and yogurt based ($13) dips like sun-dried tomato hummus and spicy roasted chilies. There's also an emphasis on fish, which arrived whole after a turn on the grill, in the Snapper ($28), Prawn ($28) and Trout ($22) variety. Supplement one of the dry-aged steaks ($95 rib eye for two) with sides like sauteed eggplant ($8) and grilled broccoli ($8).
The enormous bar has seating for 22 and boasts 19 craft beers on tap, all of which are 50% off during the restaurant's extremely early happy hour. If you can get off work to be there from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (or on the weekends, too), the cost of everything on the drink menu is cut in half, including liters and magnums of wine, sangria and the house cocktail list.
