To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Andy Warhol's "32 Campbell's Soup Cans," Campbell's brand will release a series of limited-edition cans inspired by the seminal work. The four different color-schemed cans will be sold at Target for 75 cents starting this Sunday and will feature quotes from the artist, including the famous words, "In the future, everybody will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Even factory-produced soup products.
The original Warhol 1962 piece, "32 Campbell's Soup Cans," is composed of thirty-two 20" x 16" canvases each screen printed with one flavor of each soup offered at the time. Although it initially confused the general public with its representation of mundane commercial products, that confusion ultimately opened up a larger art world conversation about the purpose of art. Subsequently, the piece contributed to an evolving art dialogue while simultaneously solidifying the Campbell's soup can as an indelible American icon.
The Warhol cans are being released in conjunction with a new line of Campbell's Soup. Touted by some news outlets as "Hipster Soups," the new flavors such as Moroccan Style Chicken with Chickpeas and Creamy Red Pepper with Smoked Gouda are meant to appeal to those 20-30-somethings of "restless spirits with adventurous tastes."
