Seemingly taking advantage of the city's sleepy holiday weekend, two men broke into the Mermaid Inn's Greenwich Village Oyster Bar, robbing the eatery of $1,000 cash. According to the NYPD, the two unknown suspects entered the restaurant around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday night.
On surveillance footage, the duo can be seen wandering through the restaurant's back of house, eventually breaking into the office to steal the cash. Also visible on the video, one of the suspects who appears to be holding a black hand gun. Luckily, nobody was at the restaurant during the time of the burglary.

Owner Cindy Smith tells us she doesn't recognize the individuals in the video but isn't ruling out that they may have been given access by someone newer on the staff. "We chose to believe that no employee would have done it but certainly someone could have." This isn't the first time the restaurant has been burglarized. Smith tells us that an individual broke in just three months ago, though the entry points for both robberies were different and the incidents appear to be unrelated. They also had previous break-ins when they operated the same space as a different restaurant, but the NYPD told the restaurant this likely wasn't part of a larger pattern.
Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS. The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
