Celebrate Santa Lucia with the Scandinavians at Smorgas Chef's West Village outpost or at Scandinavia House, where they'll be serving a special 4-course tasting menu with Scandinavian holiday foods. Each guest receives a warm glass of glogg, traditional mulled wine, to begin their meal and Santa Lucia girls—decked out in crowns made with burning candles—make multiple appearances to sing traditional carols. They're offering two seatings at each restaurant (West Village: 7:30 p.m. & 9:30 p.m.; Scandinavia House: 6:30 p.m. & 8:30 p.m.); email [email protected] for reservations.
Not that we need any excuses to down a pint or two but if imbibing means helping out adorable animals you can bet we'll be even more eager to get our brewski on. On Saturday, attend the first annual Sixpoint Holiday Concert & Beer Festival, where you'll be practically drowning in unlimited pours of the brewery's sudsy stuff. They'll have 12 of their beers on tap, including Oktoberfest, Gorilla Warfare and their Apostle IPA and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. you can sample as many of them as you like for just $40 ($50 if you wait on it). Best of all, proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society of New York, which helps animals in need and finds them loving homes.
With gift season comes many a holiday market to find a special gift for your special someone. This Saturday and Sunday swing by the BUST Magazine Holiday Craftacular & Food Fair to snap up handmade goodies for everyone on your Christmas list. While you're there, don't miss out on the good eats as well, including pies from Two Boots and cookie-stuffed cupcakes. Pick up stocking stuffers for foodies on your list with treats from Sweet Tallawa Cookies and fermented veggies from Hosta Hill.
The Queens County Market hosts a combination fundraiser and tasting even at Sunday's Pie Bake-Off. There are two ways to attend the event, starting with any amateur bakers interested in putting their best pie face forward to join the likes of Queeks Kickshaw, Edible Queens and an offering from the market itself. If eating's more on your mind, $12 tickets buy you admission and a choice of two slices of pie from the entrants. All proceeds will be donated to Oxfam America, which benefits the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
In advance of National Suckling Pig Day on December 18th, The Bounty in Greenpoint offers a Holiday Suckling Pig Roast. The 3-course dinner starts with a choice of two salads or potato soup before moving on to the main event: suckling pig au jus with grits, roasted Brussels sprouts plus beer mustard, apple chutney and kimchi on the side. The meal concludes with doughnuts dipped in apple butter and chocolate sauce. If you're craving swine but can't make it Sunday, David Burke Kitchen has some specials on the actual holiday, including Crispy Pig Heads ($24), Suckling Pig Pate ($18) and a Roast Suckling Pig ($34).
