State of Play, adapted from a popular BBC miniseries, starts Russell Crowe as a muckraking journalist who takes a cute blogger under his wing while uncovering a massive DC scandal. Though the synopsis seems fairly familiar, and while Roger Ebert deems it "a smart, ingenious thriller," he also says "it seems to land on autopilot. Maybe it's the problem of resolving so much plot in a finite length of time, but it seems a little too facile toward the end." But Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere likes it enough, calling it "a kind of farewell valentine to the traditions and disciplines that define serious journalism," and predicts that Jason Batemen will win awards for his supporting role.
