What if the NY Times' beloved Modern Love column was turned into an anthology series? That is the nuts-and-bolts jumping off point for the upcoming Amazon Prime anthology series Modern Love, which will be released on the platform on October 18th. Considering the prodigious lack of great romcom TV shows as of late (Hulu's Four Weddings And A Funeral was 😞), we are really holding out hope on this one being good. You can check out the official trailer for the show below.
The eight-episode first season of the show has drawn inspiration (and lots of plot points we're sure) from eight of the most popular Modern Love columns, which have existed since 2004. The Times helpfully points out that those eight columns have been collected in “Modern Love: True Stories of Love, Loss, and Redemption.” If you're trying to get a feel for what its tone will be, the series is directed, written, and produced by John Carney (Once, Sing Street), but also features contributions from the likes of Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Divorce) and Tom Hall (Sensation), who each wrote and directed an episode, and Emmy Rossum (Shameless), who directed another.
The show will feature a wide range of stories about love in its myriad forms, "including sexual, romantic, familial, platonic, and self love," and features a hell of a cast: Anne Hathaway, Tina Fey, Dev Patel, John Slattery, Brandon Victor Dixon, Jane Alexander, Catherine Keener, Julia Garner, Andy García, Cristin Milioti, Olivia Cooke, Andrew Scott, Shea Whigham, Gary Carr, Sofia Boutella, and John Gallagher Jr. are just some of the talent involved.
Of course, the biggest missed opportunity already is the fact that the trailer isn't soundtracked by the song below.
